Roadway Information and Traffic Counts


Traffic Counts


Traffic counts are taken at:

  • 3,000 sites on all types of public roads throughout New Jersey
  • 1,000 sites a year over 48 hour period, every three years
  • As needed to support NJDOT functions
Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) is required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Traffic volume is classified by vehicle types (number of axles) and weigh-in-motion (WIM) to identify commercial traffic.

Annual Group and Pattern Factors:

2011 Group and Pattern Factors (pdf 14k)

Developed from Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC) and Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) stations to estimate average axles/vehicle. These factors are applied to counts taken with tubes to adjust axle-pair counts to vehicles and trucks with three or more axles.

Traffic Count 2006-2010 data set with AADTs that can be imported into a GIS application (zip 627k).
